UNISA B.ED DEGREE: Foundation Phase (CODE 02593)
The B.Ed. Foundation Phase degree is a 4-year qualification and COLLEGE of CAPE TOWN is currently offering part time support classes for the qualification.
Everyone planning to start a new qualification must apply for admission at UNISA FIRST, and only after you receive your acceptance letter, can you apply at the College of Cape Town for support calasses, should you require it.
There is only one application period per year. Applications at UNISA open on the 15th August and closes on the 30th September. This application would be for the following academic year.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS & DURATION
What do I need to have completed before I can apply to study this course?
Your admission to UNISA is dependent on you meeting the specific admission requirements for your chosen qualification.
A National Senior Certificate (NSC) (Degree endorsement) with at least 50% in the language of teaching and learning and 40% in Mathematics or 50% in Mathematical Literacy, APS/AS:23
OR
a Senior Certificate (SC) with matriculation exemption or qualify for the exemption from the Matriculation Board with at least a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning and an F symbol on HG or an E symbol on SG in Mathematics, APS/AS:23
OR
a National Certificate Vocational (NCV) level 4 with at least 60% in three fundamental subjects including the language of teaching and learning. 70% in four vocational subjects chosen from the NCV level 4 subjects. Subjects under the following categories are approved as eligible for a BEd degree: All official languages at First Additional Language level, Agriculture and Nature Conservation, Business, Commerce and Management Sciences Services, Education, Training and Development Mathematics and Natural Science.
Applicants who do not comply with the above requirements should consider applying for a Higher Certificate in Education if they meet the statutory and additional requirements. In addition, the module MTE1501 must be successfully completed in the Higher Certificate.
PLEASE NOTE: ONLY a Higher Certificate in Education articulates into this programme.

Should you not meet the requirements for the Qualification, you have the option of applying at UNISA for the HIGHER CERTIFICATE in EDUCATION (remember this is subject to UNISA approval). This is a bridging course into the foundation phase. below is the link for the HIGHER CERTIFICATE:
AFTER APPLYING AT UNISA
What happens after I applied at UNISA?
- UNISA will assess your application, which includes the points score system. You may be offered a place based on the following: whether you meet the academic admission requirements for your qualification of choice, your minimum points score and the number of places available for the qualification for which you have applied.
- Please note that you will not automatically be accepted to study through UNISA even if you meet the above requirements for your qualification(s) of choice. Students will be accommodated on the basis of the number of places available for each qualification. Please note that the “first come first served” principle does NOT apply.
- UNISA will inform you of the outcome of your application.
- You must accept or decline UNISA's offer within the prescribed period of time.
- First-time applicants to UNISA will be required to complete the First-Year Experience (FYE) MOOC (massive open online course) before you will be able to accept your offer and be able to register for the academic year. You will automatically be routed to the offer acceptance page once you complete the last activity in the MOOC.
- After you have accepted UNISA’s offer and you require support classes you come and apply at College of Cape Town.
If you accept UNISA's offer, you must register for the period for which you have been granted admission. Should you not register for the relevant semester of study, you will need to re-apply for admission during the next application period.
FEES & FUNDING
What are the financial costs attached to the qualification?
- You pay an application fee when you apply. This application fee is non-refundable even if you decide not to study through UNISA or do not qualify for admission to UNISA.
- Modules vary from R1743,00 to R4000,00 each. You do 40 modules for the degree.
- Should you wish to apply at College of Cape Town for the support classes it will have an additional fee per module.
- College of Cape Town unfortunately has no funding available for the Degree.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
What will I be studying during this course?
The course consists of 40 modules, with a maximum of 10 modules to study per year (five modules each semester). Tuition takes place on two Saturdays each month.
There are compulsory 4 Teaching Practice modules which are year modules and can ONLY be registered during semester 1 registration period. Teaching practice includes five weeks of compulsory practical training every year.
