Athlone Racing Team Moving into the Fast Lane

Athlone Racing Team Moving into the Fast Lane The Team of Automotive Motor Mechanic Students & Staff at our Athlone Campus

Automotive Motor Mechanic students at the College of Cape Town’s Athlone Campus launched their first racing car in December 2019. The 1986 Jetta Mach model which was modified by 20 students who stripped the vehicle from scratch, are now participating in competitive racing at the Killarney Racetrack. Race Car Driver Azhar Davids joined the Athlone Campus in early 2022 and found out about this amazing car and immediately volunteered to be the driver as the previous driver was in the process of completing his studies.  Azhar started racing at home in 2015 as his father is also a racing driver and he inspired him to join racing.

The College Principal, Dr Muswaba attended the second race of the year to support these young men. The race team consists of the driver, a 5-member technical team (pit crew) and two staff members from the Athlone Campus. In his first race, Azhar was crowned Rookie of the Day because of the speed he was driving (fast laps) and being the youngest competitor in his group.

Mr. Carr and Mr. Downes are some of the staff members that worked hard with the students to have the car in shape and sacrificed their time and money to ensure that the car does take part in various races.
